The brewing museum in Bamberg, set in the town’s old monastery, did not perhaps receive the attention it deserved. That was because a bunch of Bamberg brewers were pouring beer upstairs and most of us beer writers were a little preoccupied sating our morning thirst to give the museum full attention, extensive as it was.

Upstairs in Cantillon’s tasting room, owner Jean-Pierre Van Roy swirled the dregs of a Dogfish Head Festina Lente in his glass, swallowed it and pursed his lips appreciatively. On the table was the carnage of a tasting of American beers — five breweries, 10 beers.

Before it became a New England tourism phenomenon, driving around the countryside "peeping" at things might have been considered disturbing if not criminal. Greeted by some locals with mock shrieks of horror when they notice the first leaf turn a slight hue of auburn, orange, or yellow, "leaf peeping" is big business from Western Massachusetts to the Maine coast. |
